for most of us,these concepts were not learned in school. If you didn't happen to have the rightreflective experiences or strong career guides in your life, you may havemissed some of this important knowledge. For over 20 years, I have worked withhundreds of individuals from early career to well-established using severaltools and frameworks to help them figure out the age old question.

Many of us who do career coaching firmly believe thatwhen the job market is this tight, it's more critical than ever to know whatyou want.

You got to whereyou are by setting your eyes on a good school, filling out an application,being admitted and working hard. Those are all very noble efforts that developa good work ethic. However, navigating the professional world requires a bitmore. Another group of listeners are those of you a bit further along in yourcareer journeys, somewhat disillusioned with your first or second job thinkingthere is no way you can spend the rest of your professional life in this typeof environment.

But now youmight be asking yourself, although I like this organization and even this team,I'm not really getting energy from what I'm doing. 80% of the time I'm at work.Am I stuck here or do I have options? This last description is similar to whereI was nearly 20 years ago. I had gone to grad school, been offered a position,overseeing the finances and operations for a young social enterprise, workingwith youth and technology.

I loved theorganization's mission and the students. I really liked the team and the workenvironment. And like many of you intelligent people who teach themselves whatthey need to learn to get the job done. I became competent at my role. Butsomething was missing and I could not really find the right framework to thinkabout it or the right words to articulate it toward the end of my time withthat organization, our cutting edge human resources director, Heather McMannintroduced us all to the language of strengths from Gallup.

And I realizedthat I wasn't really using my strengths in the majority of my role, which wasfocused on operations and finance. What I really enjoyed was strategy,relationship building and creating. However, when I looked around at my life, Irealized that I was using my strategy relationship building and creating skillsin my quote, unquote, outside of work activities, my extracurriculars.

So we could cover thenumerous high school college fairs that our admissions office was unable toreach.

What I had not realized until I started thinking about mystrengths and about what gave me energy was that this activity was leveragingmy relationship building skills, my need to create and fuel movements and theautonomy to elevate and think strategically about how to have the greatestimpact with a limited amount of resources.

Once I had the lens of strengths andinterests. I could look in the rear view mirror to what I had done in my lifeand see what patterns emerged and how I could use those patterns to describewhat really interested me in ways that were memorable to myself and others.Although I had long believed that education was the path to improvement forboth self and society.

I began torealize that education was not enough for career success. Taking the time tounderstand your areas of interest and strength is foundational to knowing whoyou are once you know, your interests and strengths. Those can be complementedby your educational degrees and industry knowledge so that what you are doingfor most of your waking hours is engaging and energizing and is moving youalong the right path that is aligned with what matters most to you.

having worked inboth selective admissions and career education for the past 15 years. I haveseen that while people are really good at doing things, they are not as good attalking about who they are and what they can do, which is equally important,especially in the career space. Why is it so important first?

I want to sharea metaphor with you that will hopefully bring the concepts I've discussed intobetter cohesion. You might feel that the professional world is some type ofmaze, like amusement park with walls, all around you. You see all these peoplewith ladders leaning up against these walls, they're climbing up so confidentlyand you just want to start climbing too.
